I recently had the pleasure to work on a great project where curator who is also an artist hand draws the gallery and then digitally hangs the art. I have visited many online galleries and I am always left feeling a little empty inside. One thing that I enjoy about going to a gallery is seeing how the art is hung and seeing the people who are wondering about. In the Six Inch Gallery, the gallery is the art and the art is the gallery. Check out http://sixinchgallery.com/
The Six Inch Gallery
On Your Desktop, Notebook, and Smartphone
The Six Inch Gallery exhibits the work of contemporary artists on the walls of a hand drawn online exhibition space fusing the analog with the digital to create a unique experience. The Grand Opening of this one-of-a-kind gallery exhibits two artists’ work; the iconic paintings of Santa Fe artist Bob Richardson and Orlando Leibovitz’s Visual Diary, an autobiography of a year in his life.
The Six Inch Gallery is an online exhibition space existing on the web and accessed on your computer, notebook, or smartphone. The gallery was conceived and drawn by Orlando Leibovitz and is a collaborative artwork among Orlando, the artist, and technologists. Orlando creates the architectural space and the figures that appear in the rooms through hand drawings on six inch square paper. The drawings are then scanned and each artwork is digitally hung on the walls.
The Six Inch Gallery currently features the paintings of Santa Fe artist Bob Richardson. Richardson’s eye and brush seize a moment that might have escaped us. His portraits and scenes make us look again and then we are reluctant to look away. Richardson befriends his subjects, without being seduced.
In 2012, Orlando created a visual diary image for each day of the year. In these six inch collage/drawings, Orlando recorded his daily perceptions and emotions, documenting his unfolding inner life, his artistic and spiritual journey.
“For centuries, people have turned to private journals. There, they would document their days, understand creative challenges, or record their stories for the future. We’ve all been touched by diaries, from Anne Frank’s brave record to today’s millions of blogs.” – Orlando Leibovitz
The Six Inch Gallery is devoted to offering an individualized viewing of online exhibitions showcasing a variety of contemporary art. The gallery will offer regular shows interweaving the analog with the portable digital experience. The Six Inch Gallery aspires to engage a broad and diverse worldwide audience and to create a place for exploration, stimulation and discussion about contemporary art. Each show becomes part of the permanent collection offering a continuously growing online gallery experience.
This unique online contemporary art gallery visualizes the ways in which we view art on the web. The current exhibition of Bob Richardson’s work will run until October 18, 2013.
